Zombie keyboard rises again

April 29th, 2004 Comments off

One phone call to Microsoft later and my keyboard is back amongst the living. And I feel really foolish for having to phone them. I hate when this happens!

The solution to my problem — a fresh install of the drivers is all it took. Seems something got corrupted somehow and killed the keyboard. Oh well, live and learn I guess. (And do a much better job diagnosing the problem next time.)

In my defense, I had no idea that the software drivers governed the way that the based station / receiver synced with the wireless keyboard. Who knew. I figured that that software would have been built into a ROM chip right within the base station itself.

RIP Wireless Keyboard

April 27th, 2004 Comments off

I can’t believe it, my keyboard died.

I have the Microsoft Wireless Pro Keyboard and Mouse. Up till yesterday morning, both worked perfectly. I woke up yesterday and the keyboard refused to work. Three sets of batteries and two computers later, the only conclusion that I came to was that the keyboard was dead. The worse part is that I really liked that keyboard. Time to buy another keyboard. I think this time, it will have a wire.

NewsForge: Remember Rekall?

April 27th, 2004 Comments off

Interesting little article about an app called Rekall. What it does is to try and duplicate the ease of use of Access. Although it does not contain its own database it allows you to create forms and reports in a similar manner to Access. For the database, you can use just about any DBMS that you would like such mysql, postgresql, db2, etc.

Read the article to get a better idea as to what this little app is capable of. If Access is that last app that is tieing you to a Windows platform than you owe it to yourself to check this article out.
