ExtremeTech: Mom Meets Linux – A Lindows 4.0 Review

June 30th, 2003 Comments off

This is an intersting review of one of the more controversial linux distributions – Lindows. And from reviews such as this one and others, it seems to becoming a solid and newbie friendly distro.

“Lindows has come a long way from our first review of version 2.0. Each release has gotten a little bit slicker and easier to use than the last and version 4.0 continues along those lines.”

Wired News: Bloggers Gain Libel Protection

June 30th, 2003 Comments off

This is cool, now I can’t be sued for republishing information on my website, at least in the states anyway.

“The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled last Tuesday that Web loggers, website operators and e-mail list editors can’t be held responsible for libel for information they republish, extending crucial First Amendment protections to do-it-yourself online publishers.

Online free speech advocates praised the decision as a victory. The ruling effectively differentiates conventional news media, which can be sued relatively easily for libel, from certain forms of online communication such as moderated e-mail lists. One implication is that DIY publishers like bloggers cannot be sued as easily.”

rewindlife: Handling file uploads without CFFILE

June 30th, 2003 Comments off

One tag that f2o.org does not allow is because it can have malicious side effects. This makes it very hard to upload files to a site through a web page. However, I seemed to have found a work around. (I didn’t create the work around, I simply found it on another website). RewindLife.com has posted code that will allow file uploads using Java. I have not tried it yet, but it looks like it should be a useable solution.

CFMX and Linux

June 26th, 2003 Comments off

Apparently, ColdFusion MX and Linux do like to play well together on systems with more then one website. Yesterday f2o attempted to upgrade their coldfusion installation from version 5 to MX. This ended in complete failure. This means no new upgrades or features for the next little while. Hopefully they can get everything sorted out and create a stable install.

Scheduled downtime tomorrow

June 24th, 2003 Comments off

The site will be offline tomorrow, June 25, 2003, from 9:30am-10am EST for software upgrades. The hosting company that I am with is upgrading from ColdFusion 5 to ColdFusion MX.

Look for site upgrades and additions over the next few weeks. My goal is to redo the underlaying foundation for the site using cfc’s. This will result in a much simpler site to maintain and added functionality as well.

Sorry for the inconvienence.

PCLinuxOnline: Mandrake Linux 9.2 Release Schedule

June 23rd, 2003 Comments off

I found this on pclo and I am hoping that they stick to the schedule. On the other hand, I am also hoping that they release a quality product. Mandrake 9.2 was an excellent release with very few problems (actually, I have yet to find any). Hopefully, 9.2 will be equal in quality.
