The Register: Microsoft plots Macromedia coup against Java

December 24th, 2002 Comments off

Now here is a very scary thought:

“Microsoft Corp is believed to have trained its acquisition crosshairs on Macromedia Inc, lining up a deal that would throw enterprise Java into a spin, Gavin Clarke writes.

Industry and analyst sources believe Microsoft covets San Francisco, California-based Macromedia’s Flash vector graphics design tool and player, which was radically updated this year.”http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/28667.html

December 18th, 2002 Comments off

Linux software provider Red Hat Inc. said Tuesday it earned a profit under generally accepted accounting rules for the first time, attributing its net income to higher server subscriptions.

The Raleigh-based company said it earned $305,000, or break-even per share, for the three months ending Nov. 30, compared to a net loss of $15.1 million, or 7 cents per share, in the same period a year ago.

Linux Word: 4 newbie questions about Linux answered

December 5th, 2002 Comments off

In the endless quest to find tutorials and answers for linux beginners, I have found this little article on LinuxWorld. It is not too badly written and has some good advice. However, it is very brief in that advice that it is giving.

Summary: “A reader asks, ‘Can I run any Linux application on Windows and any Windows application on Linux? If yes, how? Where can I get a tutorial on starting with Linux and its benefits? How can I install Linux on my system? From where I can get Linux applications?’ Here’s our shot at answering this reader’s questions.”http://www.linuxworld.com/site-stories/2002/1204.cappel.html

LinuxWorld: Three reasons for newbie-centric culture shock

December 5th, 2002 Comments off

LinuxWorld has posted an excellent article identifying three reasons that newbies to Linux have a hard time making the transition. Interestingly, the installation is not one of the reasons.

“Ever since his own jump to open source, Joe Barr has been hearing complaints from Linux newbies and never really bought into any of them. Until now. Joe points out three major obstacles for anyone making the jump to Linux and explains how the operating system’s usability can improve.”In response to this, and based on some ideas of my own, I am going to redo the sad excuse for an articles section of the website and rename it “How do I … ?” and try to answer some of those questions.

I am also going to create a side-by-side windows/linux software comparisson chart. I don’t know how many times I have tried to find a similiar program in Linux to one that I have used on windows with no luck. Part of that is that not all programs have linux counterparts, the other problem is simply not knowing where to look or what program does what.

Hopefully, this will help a few people out and it should be fun to do as well.http://www.linuxworld.com/site-stories/2002/1203.barr.html
